FAQ's

Q- Who does Kalamazoo Gospel Mission serve?
A - Homeless or abused men, women, and children. Minors are accepted only with a parent or guardian also staying at the Mission. We provide for their basic needs as well as for their deeper emotional and spiritual needs. We make every effort to help them get back on their feet again. We focus on the whole person - spiritually, emotionally, physically, educationally, and socially. 55% of our clients are adult men, 26% adult women, and 19% children.

Q - How long can clients stay?
A - As long as necessary to wotk through their specific circumstances and return as functional members to the community. No two cases are the same.

Q - How is KGM funded?
A - Primarily through private donations (96%), churches, foundations & community organizations (2%), and businesses (2%). We accept very limited government funding, and only after confirming that our commitment to preach the gospel will not be compromised.

Q - How is my donation dollar used?
A - 70% goes for program services, 17% for public education and development, and 13% for administration.

Q - Who refers clients to KGM?
A - Agencies, churches, hospitals and other sources. You can get involved by referring the homeless you see in the community to us as well.

If at all possible, please bring identification with you if you intend to stay at the Mission. A brief intake form will be completed upon your arrival, and the policies and procedures thoroughly explained.

A - Anything! The only thing we can't use is mouthwash or cough syrup with alcohol in it. Other than that, any clothing, hygiene product, or food item is gratefully accepted.

A - That depends on what it is! Contact Rescued Treasures at 269-343-1044 to discuss your specific donation situation.

Q - How old do you have to be to volunteer?
A - If accompanied by an adult, children age 8 and over are encouraged to volunteer. Volunteers must be at least 16 to volunter in the kitchen, for safety reasons There is plenty for volunteers 15 and under to do in the food warehouse or dining room, including serving meals at the salad bar. Overall, volunteers must be at least 16 if not accompanied by an adult or with a group.

Q- Where is the donation center?
A - North of the Mission, across the railroad tracks. Follow the large white signs that will lead you to this area. Volunteers will assist you in unloading your vehicle.

Q - Will you accept fresh vegetables?
A - Happily! We love to serve our clients fresh healthy food. Thanks!

Q - If I want to designate my donation, is that okay? I don't want my donations sold.
A - Due to the volume of items received, all donations of used items go to the donation center. (New items may be brought to the Administation area.) One of two things will happen to your used item.
1) It may be sold, and the proceeds come back in to support the work of the Mission.
2) It might be given away through our voucher program. Clients in need of a specific item can obtain a voucher and go to Rescued Treasures, where they can select the item from the rack or shelves. Either way, your item is going to a very good cause!
